How to Turn a Hand Drawing Into a Vector (Sketch to SVG)

October 15, 2026 · 2 min read

Hand-drawn art has a character that's hard to fake digitally. Converting your sketch into a vector keeps that character while making it scalable, editable and ready for print, engraving or cutting.

Capture the drawing well

  • Ink over pencil lines with a dark pen or marker.
  • Photograph in even daylight, straight above the page, to avoid shadows — or use a scanner.
  • Crop tightly to the drawing.

Trace with Line art

Open the image to vector converter and choose Line art. This converts your drawing to pure black and white.

  • Paper texture showing as dots? Raise Remove specks.
  • Lines breaking apart? Your photo is too light — increase contrast in your phone's photo editor and re-upload.
  • Want to keep a slightly hand-made wobble? Use Smooth curves with a lower Segment length.

Uses for your vector sketch

  • Logos and signatures with a personal touch
  • Tattoo stencils that print at any size
  • Laser engraving and Cricut — use Cutout layering
  • Stickers and merch — see print on demand with free tools

Colour it in later

Import the SVG into Figma, Inkscape or Illustrator and fill the closed shapes with colour. Because the tracer outputs real closed paths, fills snap neatly inside your lines.
