Digital SVG bundles are one of the most popular downloads on Etsy. Crafters buy them for Cricut, Silhouette and laser machines, and because the product is a file, you make it once and sell it forever. This guide shows the full workflow — from generating an idea with AI to a listing that's ready to publish — with nothing more than free tools.
What buyers actually want in an SVG
Before you create anything, understand what makes a cut file sell:
- Clean, closed paths. Cutting machines follow outlines. Stray specks and gaps ruin a cut.
- Few colours. Each colour becomes a separate layer of vinyl. Two to four colours is the sweet spot.
- Bold shapes. Thin hairlines tear vinyl. Designs should read clearly at 3 inches wide.
- Multiple formats. Include SVG, PNG (transparent, 300 DPI), DXF if you can, and a JPG preview.
Popular niches include teacher quotes, pet silhouettes, seasonal designs (Halloween, Christmas, Diwali), mandalas, sports mom shirts and wedding signage.
Step 1: Generate the artwork with AI
Use any image generator you have rights to use commercially. The trick is to prompt for trace-friendly images:
flat vector illustration of a sleeping cat, bold black outline, solid colors, no gradients, no shading, white background, sticker style
Keywords that help: flat, vector style, bold outline, solid colours, no gradients, white background, sticker, line art, silhouette. Avoid photorealism — gradients and textures trace into hundreds of tiny shapes.
Check the licence. Read the terms of the AI tool you use to confirm commercial use is allowed, and check Etsy's current seller policy on AI-assisted designs — Etsy asks sellers to disclose when AI tools were used in creating an item.
Step 2: Remove the background
Even "white background" generations leave off-white noise that becomes a shape when traced. Drop the image into the free background remover and download a transparent PNG. If you generated a whole set, drop them all at once and download a ZIP.
Step 3: Trace it into an SVG
Open the Image to Vector converter and add your cutouts.
- Choose the Logo preset for flat, multi-colour designs, or Line art for single-colour silhouettes and quotes.
- Raise Remove specks until stray dots disappear.
- Lower Colour detail until you have only the colours you want as vinyl layers.
- For cut files, open Advanced controls and set Layering to Cutout. This makes non-overlapping shapes, which is exactly what cutting software expects.
- Click Download SVG. For a set, use Trace all and grab every SVG in one ZIP.
Open the SVG in Cricut Design Space or Inkscape to check that each colour is a separate layer and nothing is missing.
Step 4: Make the PNG and preview files
Many buyers use sublimation or print-and-cut, so include a high-resolution PNG:
- Use PNG 4K in the tracer to export a crisp, large transparent PNG from your vector.
- Set it to 300 DPI with the DPI changer.
- Create mockup images (shirts, mugs, tote bags) at 2000 × 2000 px using the Product square preset in the image resizer.
Step 5: Package the bundle
Put everything in one ZIP named clearly, for example sleeping-cat-svg-bundle.zip:
sleeping-cat.svg
sleeping-cat.png (transparent, 300 DPI)
sleeping-cat.dxf (optional, for Silhouette Basic)
license.txt (personal / small commercial use terms)
Etsy limits file size per digital download, so compress your preview images with the image compressor and keep the ZIP lean.
Step 6: Write a listing that ranks
Etsy search rewards specific titles and tags. Instead of "Cat SVG", use the phrases buyers type:
- Title: Sleeping Cat SVG, Cat Lover Cricut File, Cute Kitten PNG, Pet Silhouette Cut File, Instant Download
- Tags: cat svg, cricut cat, kitten png, pet svg bundle, cat mom shirt, cut file, sublimation png
- Description: list file formats, dimensions, what's included and your license terms.
Pricing and volume
Single designs typically sell for a few dollars; bundles of 10–50 designs sell for more and get more favourites. Because the workflow above handles batches at every step — background removal, tracing, resizing — you can produce a 20-design bundle in an afternoon.
